I conducted my research in western Uganda for Fair Trade Carbon Limited (FTCL), a Canadian/Ugandan carbon offsetting business. FTCL employs local Ugandan secondary and university students to plant pine trees (to earn money for tuition) and in turn sells the carbon offsets to western Canadian companies. My research addresses the potential affects of pine plantations on stream flow and will assist FTCL in developing best management practices with their forestry practices in Uganda. This unique opportunity wasnt possible without the financial support of the Irving K. Barber International Education Travel Subsidy, MITACS Accelerate BC, and Fair Trade Carbon Limited. |
